Education

Oct 2015 - Feb 2020 - PhD in Medical Imaging in the University College London (UCL), London, UK

With thesis entitled "Registration of Ultrasound to Computed Tomography for Guidance of Laparoscopic Liver Surgery". In this project, I explored the problem of aligning small, intra-operative ultrasound images of the liver acquired during laparoscopy, to a pre-operative CT scan. Main  outcome of this work is a novel registration framework that is automatic, works on untracked images, and can potentially be deployed in clinic.

Feb 2013 - Jul 2013 - Semester under ERASMUS exchange programme at the Universiteit Twente, Enschede, Netherlands.

Besides completing research relevant modules,  I did a brief internship in MIRA focused on Human Machine Interfaces to control arm orthoses for the benefit of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy patients.

Oct 2009 - Dec 2014 - Integrated MSc in Biomedical Engineering in Instituto Superior Técnico, Lisbon, Portugal.

In my final project, I have worked on the integration of Ultrasonix™ Ultrasound machines and KUKA™ Lightweight robots for prostate interventions guided by robotic ultrasound.

Professional Experience

Oct 2022 - Dec 2024 - Senior Research Fellow at WEISS Centre in UCL

Continuing work as Researcher Co-Investigator and lead engineer in previous projects, contributing as Deputy Module Lead to the Medical Physics course in "Medical Robotics and Devices", and further bridging technical work to usability assessments with the UCL Interaction Centre.

Oct 2019 - Dec 2020 - Research Assistant at WEISS Centre in UCL

Developing methods for alignment of 2D Ultrasound images to 3D CT without tracking devices for the guidance of Laparoscopic Liver surgery, in collaboration with the SmartLiver project.

Jan 2021 - Sep 2022 - Research Fellow  at WEISS Centre in UCL

As a Researcher Co-Investigator in the EPSRC "Real-Time Ultrasound Guided Abdominal Interventions Without a Tracking Device" , leading the development of trackerless ultrasound guidance solutions for endoscopic and laparoscopic procedures, and acting as a leading engineer in the SmartLiver project, working on software development, testing and data collection.
